For the record (yet again), this blogging thing is hard! Hopefully I'm my toughest critic, because if not you people are saying some nasty stuff about me right now. I've written 4 or 5 partial posts over the last week or so, but nothing really came together. I am, however, intrigued by a couple articles that were published on the internet on back-to-back days at the start of the month about kids and computers.
The first article from July 5th, titled "So How Dumb Are We" focuses on whether the computer and internet habits of kids are turning them into "The Dumbest Generation". Author and English professor Mark Bauerlein wrote the book which led to this article, and he is of the opinion that young American kids are still intelligent, but not intellectually healthy. His basis for this is kids' lack of reading skills and new habits developed from growing up with the internet. The internet is vilified here because it teaches kids to access information and not retain it, to gloss over things instead of committing them to memory. Bauerlein says this translates to the classroom, where students carry over these bad habits and consequentially fail to learn.
On the opposite end of the spectrum is an article from July 6th titled "Technology Reshapes America's Classrooms" . This piece shines the spotlight on a state-funded school in Boston where every day 650 students are handed a Apple MacBook Laptop when they walk into school. The school does not buy textbooks, it merely updates software. Much of the work is also done using free applications from Google and Apple, along with specialized educational software. According to the schools principal, since the laptop program was put into place attendance has risen 2% and disciplinary actions have fallen 30%. Most interesting in my opinion is when the principal points out that the computers allow the students to work at their own pace. She says that special needs students can share a classroom with advanced students and teachers can individually tailor lesson plans based on aptitude levels recorded by the computers.
Personally, I'm all for using computers and new technology for teaching. I have a hard time believing the internet can be a net negative for anyone. I'm more inclined to think that the education system needs to adjust in order to keep kids interested and engaged. I also love the thought of students being able to progress through lessons at their own pace. People work at different speeds, and using computers could allow everyone to maximize their time instead of waiting for others to grasp a topic or struggling to keep up in class. The article doesn't mention it, but I would assume that computer based teaching would also allow for teaching to be tailored to each student's best learning methods (reading, hearing, working through examples, etc.).
So, what do you think? Are computers preventing kids from learning or are they a potentially significant teaching tool that is not being utilized enough?

Two distinct points are raised in both articles...learning...and teaching. Personally, i believe that there needs to be an equal expectation for the student to learn (what most amreican schools do) and for the teacher to teach (which most american schools do not do.)
Television, telephones, music, automobiles, radios, ipods, all have been blamed for the Devils influence to stifile learning...I hardly believe that the internet can avoid the same demonization. Truth is the kid learns and the teachers teach...you can't have one without the other.

You're right, it's definitely a two way street. My hope is that computers and the internet can avoid being demonized (slim chance, I know) so that teachers won't miss out on a valuable opportunity to improve their ability to teach and encourage their students to learn.
The myriad of uncontrolled variables intertwined in computers, teaching, and learning make either outcome possible. The perfect combination of a curious student, a demanding teacher, and involved parents all enhanced by computer technology should produce a well informed student. But there are many other combinations that might be less than optimal.
As someone who's been wired since age ten or so, this debate splits me right down the middle. I believe very much in the idea that technology has the potential to educate in ways that were simply unachievable by traditional means. Interactive software that can really engage kids into learning while simultaneously letting them have fun is one of those things, and yeah, I also think it's very valuable to let them learn at their own pace. At the same time, I do feel that the advent of the technology age has eroded many other aspects of learning, among them, reading. There is an article in the NYTimes from a few days ago that addresses Internet literacy and how children these days are reading differently -- preferring online articles and stories to anything in print, if the things they read online really constitute as reading at all.
I have two brothers, both younger than me, though one is much closer to me in age though and I recall fondly that we were both very avid readers in elementary and middle school. Older reading software like the Living Books series were fantastic and offered literary guidance that my immigrant parents couldn't provide. That's one example of technology teaching well. Unfortunately, these days, for my other brother who is currently seven, there don't seem to be as many good options that promote reading at all, even if it's digital reading. Technology these days seems geared more towards games that fire out puzzles and memorization points, but don't promote reading. As a result, this brother hardly reads at all. It's a very, very stark difference.
For getting kids interesting in things like computing, engineering, science, and math, technology seems well-adapted for it, especially since those fields are very deeply rooted in technology itself these days. But for more traditional disciplines and interests in the liberal arts, I think technology is really lagging behind in encouraging kids to take up on it. Art, reading, and writing are much harder to facilitate in purely technological environments -- there needs to be some hands-on stuff. Kids need to draw and pick up books and write with an actual writing implement now and again. Yes, programs like the oldschool Living Books may promote these activities to some degree, but in the end, kids still need to get off the computer and do some things themselves.
I feel like I've rambled too much and might have confused my own point though. :(
Kiriska,
Do you happen to have a link to the NYT story you mentioned? I'd be very interested in that as I'm an avid reader and feel that kids who don't get started reading early are missing out.
I didn't really get into reading for pleasure until age 12 or so, so keep the faith even if your younger brother isn't hitting the books yet!
And don't worry about rambling/possibly confusing your own point... I'll likely be doing plenty of that myself on this blog.
Here is the article. It's interesting to note that the article describes a kid who prefers reading less-than-stellar fanfiction online to actual books. I thought it was funny that they used that as the comparison point because while there certainly is a lot of garbage fanfiction out there, legnthy involvement in the community does come to eventually promote better grammar and general writing skills.

China and Russia put the blame on some screwed up experiments of US for the earthquake that happened in Haiti.

The French gourmet cheese Bleu d'Auvergne has a wonderful aroma, a rich taste; the saltiness increases with the incidence of veining. The overall flavor is piquant but not overly sharp. Bleu d'Auvergne started life as an imitation of Roquefort, using cow's milk in place of sheep's milk. Legend has it that a peasant, around 1845, decided to inject his cheese with a blue mold that he found growing on his left-over bread (the motto being, waste not, want not). And thus, the gourmet cheese Bleu d'Auvergne was born. This French gourmet blue cheese comes from the region of Auvergne and the cheese is made from milk of Salers and Aubrac cows. The rind is very thin and so the cheese is usually wrapped in foil. The cheese is rich and creamy with a pale yellow color and scattered holes and well-defined greenish-blue veining. We cut and wrap this cheese in wedge of 8 ounces and 1 pound.
