Opinions Needed: Sports Jersey and Band T-Shirt Wearing Etiquette

I'm hoping some of you who have been contributing to the great discussion re: "The Dark Knight" are still stopping in and may be able to help me gain a better understanding on an issue my friends and I have discussed occasionally.

My main concern is the question of when it is appropriate to wear a jersey from your favorite sports team.  My personal opinion is that almost never is too often.  Anyone over the age of 13 should not attempt to wear a jersey anywhere other than at a stadium/arena/ballpark/tailgating area while attending a game, and I personally don't even like to do that.  Special dispensation might be provided for wearing a jersey at home during a big game, especially if fans of the opposing team will be at your home during the game, but even that is pushing it in my mind.  Note that under no circumstances should a jersey be worn to a bar or public area, no matter the magnitude of the event being watched.  Finally, I think it should go without saying that anyone wearing a jersey who has no intention whatsoever of watching a sporting event should be immediately incapacitated and delivered to the nearest mental facility for a thorough examination.

It's not that I'm against being a passionate fan and rooting for your team.  I grew up in a suburb of Columbus, Ohio and am a huge Ohio State Buckeyes fan.  I never miss watching a football game and make every effort to see the Buckeyes in person at least once during each campaign.  I just feel that grown men walking around in jerseys look ridiculous.  You're not on the team, you'll never be on the team, so please dress like a fan and not a player.  (I wonder if baseball is to blame for this trend?  It's the only sport that requires non-athletic non-participants to wear the uniforms of the players.)

On the other hand, I have been told that some people share a similar view in regards to band or concert t-shirts.  I have no problem with this at all and do not understand why this would be an issue in most situations.  I can only think of one situation where it would definitely be inappropriate.  That would be if one were to wear a shirt from an artist in one genre (e.g. country) to the concert of an artist in an incompatible genre (e.g. alternative) in a non-ironic fashion.   Attending a Death Cab For Cutie concert in a Kenny Chesney shirt would definitely not be cool.  Some have argued that wearing the t-shirt of the band that you are going to see that night is also inappropriate, but I think that can go either way.  As far as day to day fashion goes, I think the band/concert t-shirt can be worn anywhere a normal t-shirt is welcomed.

I'd like to know what others think on this one.  Post a comment if you have an opinion!

You are painting with way to broad of a stroke on the canvas of adult public jersey wearing. There are several situations where, wearing a jersey is complete acceptable. I will list two, in hope that it we can clear up some misconceptions about public jersey wearing. First, it is always acceptable to wear a jersey to piss off a neighbor. For a number of years I lived next to a big Penn State fan. I am from Columbus Ohio, and emphatically support the Ohio State Buckeyes. During Game Days, I would consume an inordinate amount of BLs, put on my OSU Jersey, force my Golden retriever into her Buckeye Jersey, and run circles though Penn State Fan’s yard yelling every anti Penn State Slur I could come up with. Usually, Penn State Fan’s retribution to my verbal assault was a quick mooning. But I argue that the mooning would have been far more effective with a Penn State Jersey on. Please revise your thoughts on adult jersey wearing, to allow for this completely appropriate adult use of the team jersey.

I find that "it looks ridiculous" to be poor argument in any debate. Fashion is, after all, a very subjective and personal thing. People should wear what they want, no matter if others perceive it as silly or "inappropriate." In particular, I'm not a big fan of designating appropriateness based on age. If a thirteen year old is allowed to express his fanhood by wearing a jersey, why shouldn't he be able to do then same when he's fourteen? Or forty? People age and mature, but there's nothing wrong with being a child at heart. The only time I might consider wearing anything to be inappropriate is when things that are obscene or otherwise seriously offensive (a Nazi shirt at a Holocaust memorial is obviously inappropriate), but as I don't find sports jerseys harmful in the slighest, I don't see the issue.

As for the band shirt debate, it may draw a few strange looks to wear a shirt of a different genre to a particular concert, but inappropriate? Nah. I've also been told that it's inappropriate to wear a shirt of the band you intend to see on a particular day, but I don't see why it's an issue. Clearly, you're supporting the band and displaying your fandom. And besides, consider many bands sell their shirts at the venue before the show, you gotta put that shirt somewhere, eh? Might as well wear it. For my genre of choice anyway, aside from the standing in line part before hand, once you get to the concert itself, what you're wearing is entirely irrelevant because no one will be looking at you or your shirt.

I'll have to add Steve's "Wearing a Jersey out of Spite" condition to my own personal list of approved jersey uses. Makes total sense.

Kiriska, unlike my Dark Knight post, I really don't have a good argument to support my position on this one, only stating an opinion that I've heard from others and agree with myself. I thought I would throw the issue out there to see what people thought. I am probably guilty of a little hyperbole in my discussion of the topic, but just trying to have a some fun.

Heh, well. I may be taking the topic too seriously. :P I'm not big on sports, in any case. The band shirt thing peeves me a little because I've been called out on it, but yeah.

Nice proposition, however you are somewhat misguided by your motivations....team Jerseys are really nothing more than a band of individuals playing a chorus, ie playbook...And, a Band/Concert is a team trying to win you over to thier art, lyrics, or theme...
Aren't you really just another biased journalist presenting your personal point of view as one the masses should embrace.
Go stand next to Dan Rather in your Def Leopard t-shirt....Ask Marylin Manson over to watch Da Bears in your Brett Farve Jets jersey
Embrace it for what it is pure unadultrated US capitalism...buy your wife, dog, and nieces t-shirts, and jerseys of teams/bands you hate...be like all the kids in the lower parts of Africa who love to wear Patriot Super Bowl 2008 champion t-shirts and Boy George MTV Jerseys...either that or go naked.

Wow, I thought politics was passionate, but apparently sports jerseys and t-shirts have a much deeper side than I realized. It's really all about conforming - either you like identifying totally with a team or group - or you like to maintain your individuality, even while showing support to a group. I always felt concert T's were used as status symbols of a sort, but team jerseys just say we are all part of the team (school).

Hi there!
I would like to burn a theme at this forum. There is such a thing, called HYIP, or High Yield Investment Program. It reminds of financial piramyde, but in rare cases one may happen to meet a company that really pays up to 2% daily not on invested money, but from real profits.

For quite a long time, I earn money with the help of these programs.
I'm with no money problems now, but there are heights that must be conquered . I make 2G daily, and my first investment was 500 dollars only.
Right now, I managed to catch a guaranteed variant to make a sharp rise . Visit my blog to get additional info.
