Hi there!

Wow, I thought politics was passionate, but apparently sports jerseys and t-shirts have a much deeper side than I realized. It's really all about conforming - either you like identifying totally with a team or group - or you like to maintain your individuality, even while showing support to a group. I always felt concert T's were used as status symbols of a sort, but team jerseys just say we are all part of the team (school).

Nice proposition, however you are somewhat misguided by your motivations....team Jerseys are really nothing more than a band of individuals playing a chorus, ie playbook...And, a Band/Concert is a team trying to win you over to thier art, lyrics, or theme...
Aren't you really just another biased journalist presenting your personal point of view as one the masses should embrace.

Embrace it for what it is pure unadultrated US capitalism...buy your wife, dog, and nieces t-shirts, and jerseys of teams/bands you hate...be like all the kids in the lower parts of Africa who love to wear Patriot Super Bowl 2008 champion t-shirts and Boy George MTV Jerseys...either that or go naked.

Kiriska, unlike my Dark Knight post, I really don't have a good argument to support my position on this one, only stating an opinion that I've heard from others and agree with myself. I thought I would throw the issue out there to see what people thought. I am probably guilty of a little hyperbole in my discussion of the topic, but just trying to have a some fun.

I find that "it looks ridiculous" to be poor argument in any debate. Fashion is, after all, a very subjective and personal thing. People should wear what they want, no matter if others perceive it as silly or "inappropriate." In particular, I'm not a big fan of designating appropriateness based on age. If a thirteen year old is allowed to express his fanhood by wearing a jersey, why shouldn't he be able to do then same when he's fourteen? Or forty? People age and mature, but there's nothing wrong with being a child at heart. The only time I might consider wearing anything to be inappropriate is when things that are obscene or otherwise seriously offensive (a Nazi shirt at a Holocaust memorial is obviously inappropriate), but as I don't find sports jerseys harmful in the slighest, I don't see the issue.

As for the band shirt debate, it may draw a few strange looks to wear a shirt of a different genre to a particular concert, but inappropriate? Nah. I've also been told that it's inappropriate to wear a shirt of the band you intend to see on a particular day, but I don't see why it's an issue. Clearly, you're supporting the band and displaying your fandom. And besides, consider many bands sell their shirts at the venue before the show, you gotta put that shirt somewhere, eh? Might as well wear it. For my genre of choice anyway, aside from the standing in line part before hand, once you get to the concert itself, what you're wearing is entirely irrelevant because no one will be looking at you or your shirt.

I will list two, in hope that we can clear up some misconceptions about public jersey wearing. First, it is always acceptable to wear a jersey to piss off a neighbor. For a number of years I lived next to a big Penn State Fan. I am from Columbus Ohio, and emphatically support the Ohio State Buckeyes. During Game Days, I would consume an inordinate amount of BLs, put on my OSU Jersey, force my Golden Retriever into her Buckeye Jersey, and run circles though Penn State Fan’s yard yelling every anti Penn State Slur I could come up with. Usually, Penn State Fan’s retribution to my verbal assault was a quick mooning. But I argue that the mooning would have been far more effective with a Penn State Jersey on. Please revise your thoughts on adult jersey wearing, to allow for this completely appropriate adult use of the team jersey.
